Eight automobile industry associations are relaunching a coalition formed last year to defend the North American Free Trade Agreement, but this time with the mission of opposing the Trump administration's proposed tariffs on foreign auto imports.
The Driving American Jobs Coalition "represents the United States' leading auto manufacturers, parts suppliers, auto dealers, parts distributors, retailers and vehicle service providers," according to the coalition's website. The group doesn't list members but Politico reported eight auto industry associations make up the coalition, including the Association of Global Automakers and Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.
The coalition was first formed in October 2017 to defend NAFTA from attempts by President Donald Trump to change the trade agreement. Now the group is focused on opposing the administration proposed tariffs on automobiles and auto parts manufactured abroad.
The proposed 25 percent tariffs "would have a devastating impact on the automotive and parts industry," according to the coalition. If the tariffs take effect, they could result in more than 700,000 job losses, a nearly $60 billion decline in the U.S. gross domestic product and increase the price of the average vehicle by $4,000.
The other members of the coalition are the American Automotive Policy Council, Auto Care Association, Specialty Equipment Market Association, American International Automobile Dealers Association, Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association and National Automobile Dealers Association.
